Risk Factors that increase a person’s chance of getting colorectal cancer:
Age - risk increases after age 50
Ethnic background - Jews of Eastern European descent have higher risk
History of - Having had colorectal cancer before, a history of polyps, or a history of bowel disease
Diet - diets high in animal fats increase risk
Lack of exercise
Overweight
Smoking - smokers are 30 – 40% more likely to die of colorectal cancer

Steps you can take to reduce your risk:
Screening tests - talk to your doctor about your risk factors and get screened early
Diet & Exercise - The American Cancer Society recommends eating atleast 5 servings of fruits and vegetables/day. Also, get atleast 30 min. of physical activity 5 or more days/week.
Other factors – people with a family history of colorectal cancer may benefit from starting screening tests when they are younger and more often. Source: American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org)
